Over the past several seasons, the Golden State Warriors have earned a reputation for paying a league-high quantity of luxury taxes. It is not inexpensive to field a roster that includes Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, but championships make it much easier for owner Joe Lacob to foot the bill.
When they defeated the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals, the Golden State Warriors became one of the rare teams to have won four championships in eight seasons. Losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals, the Golden State Warriors have made moves this offseason to capitalize on the championship window their three talents keep open.
After signing a four-year, $100 million contract this summer, Curry is under contract through the 2025-26 season and Green is under contract through the 2026-27 season. Thompson will earn $43.2 million during the upcoming season before becoming a free agent in 2024.
Lacob recently provided an update on the situation regarding whether or not the Warriors will offer him a new, lengthy contract extension. Speaking with Tim Kawakami of The Athletic on “The TK Show,” Golden State’s owner made it plain that he expects Klay to continue wearing a Warriors uniform indefinitely.
Lacob responded affirmatively when asked if he anticipates Thompson’s return to the Warriors. “Look, we’ve had some limited conversations with his agent so far, but it’s still very early. I believe we are all still adjusting to determining our financial situation, specifically our cap space situation.”
After acquiring Chris Paul this offseason, Golden State will have more flexibility than anticipated heading into next summer, particularly considering they can waive the veteran point guard without incurring a salary cap penalty. It is also conceivable that they will renegotiate the contracts of other players in order to reach an agreement with Klay.Lacob continued, “They will logically have to attest to what the free agent market might be because they have earned the right to be free agents if they have fulfilled their contracts.” “And they must determine what options they may have. I believe a small amount of this is occurring at this time, but I anticipate that we will shortly have substantive discussions. And we’ll see if we can come up with a plan that enables Klay to remain here for a long time, which is what we want.”
Klay Thompson’s impending free agency would have a significant impact on the Warriors during the regular season if they are unable to agree to a new contract with Klay Thompson prior to the start of training camp. Klay could potentially become an unrestricted free agent to gain a greater understanding of his market, similar to how Green handled his contract situation last season.
Klay Thompson has averaged 19.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in 10 seasons with the Warriors, while shooting 41.6 percent from three-point range. Currently, he ranks 18th in career three-point percentage and 11th in all-time three-pointers made in the NBA.
