Miami Heat forward Nikola Jovic has played an instrumental role in leading Team Serbia to the championship game of the FIBA World Cup. However, it’s not just his on-court performance that’s making headlines; it’s his off-court antics that have captured attention.
Following Serbia’s 95-86 victory over Team Canada in the FIBA World Cup semifinals, Jovic celebrated in a unique manner. He playfully mimicked Canada’s Dillon Brooks, the Houston Rockets forward whose pregame shadow boxing routine had gone viral on social media earlier in the week, as he sprinted down the postgame tunnel.
Jovic, drafted by the Miami Heat with the 27th pick in the previous year’s draft, has been a key contributor to Serbia’s journey to the championship game. In the win over Canada, he contributed eight points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting and secured one rebound. Canada’s team boasts several NBA talents, including Dillon Brooks, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, and Kelly Olynyk, making them one of the tournament favorites.
Standing at 6-foot-11 and aged 20, Jovic has shone on the talented Serbian roster, which includes NBA player Bogdan Bogdanovic and seasoned Serbian veterans. Throughout the tournament’s seven games, Jovic has averaged 10.3 points while shooting an impressive 60.5% from the field, including 45.5% from beyond the arc. In the championship game, Jovic may have the opportunity to face Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who serves as an assistant coach for Team USA, led by Warriors coach Steve Kerr. Team USA faces Germany in the semifinals.
As the sole Miami Heat player competing in the World Cup, Jovic has been mentioned in potential trade scenarios for Damian Lillard, who requested a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers in July. If Jovic isn’t part of a deal for Lillard, his impressive performance in the World Cup could set the stage for a more successful second NBA season, following a rookie year hampered by a back injury that limited him to just 15 NBA games.
