Novak Djokovic pays tribute to Kobe Bryant after winning the 2023 US Open and claiming his 24th Grand Slam title.

In honor of his 24 Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic is having a Mamba party.

The 36-year-old held off his 27-year-old Russian opponent, Daniil Medvedev, and won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

When Novak Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam title, he collapsed to the court and then ran into the stands to celebrate with his wife and children (and Matthew McConaughey, who got the first hug once Djokovic made it to his player’s box). He was wearing a brightly colored shirt that read “Mamba Forever” and featured an image of Kobe Bryant.

“I thought of doing this t-shirt eventually if I get the chance to win the tournament,” Djokovic said. “Kobe and I were very close, and we had many conversations about having a winning mindset when I was recovering from an ιnjury and attempting to return to my former glory. When I needed help, he was there for me.

“What happened a few years ago, him and his daughter passing, hurt me deeply,” the tennis star said. I felt 24 would be a wonderful, symbolic thing to thank him for what he’s done because that’s the jersey he wore when he became a legend of the Lakers and of basketball around the world.

Djokovic got out to a good start and won the first set convincingly (6-3).

Djokovic collapsed to the court following a long rally in the second set, which was far more difficult than the first. Despite an early break by Medvedev, Djokovic forced a tiebreak and ultimately won the set 7-6 (7-5).

With this victory, Djokovic ties Margaret Court for the record of most Grand Slam singles titles won with 24, but he also surpasses Serena Williams’ Open Era record of 23.

In addition, this final was a repeat from the 2021 US Open, which this time around Medvedev won in straight sets.

Charlize Theron returned for day 2 of the finals and danced — again, this time to Prince — as did Martha Stewart, Lil Wayne, Zach Braff, Christie Brinkley, Molly Ringwald, Andy Cohen, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Eva Longoria.
