The fact that the Golden State Warriors signed Usman Garuba to a two-way contract may have been lost in the shuffle when word got out that they were meeting with eight-time All-Star Dwight Howard. Shams Charania of The Athletic, who also broke the Howard news, revealed that the Golden State Warriors had signed free agency center Usman Garuba to a two-way contract. The former first-round pick for the Rockets just finished up a FIBA World Cup in which he averaged 8.2 points and 4 rebounds for Spain.
Garuba, who is only 21 years old, has played the past two seasons with the NBA’s Houston Rockets. Garuba, the Warriors’ 23rd overall choice in the 2021 NBA Draft, is a potential star for the team. With this acquisition, Golden State has used two of their three available two-way slots.
Adding a player like Garuba shows that the Warriors still care about having a deep front court on their main roster. The Warriors are an unusual club in that they have occasionally given two-way players significant playing time on a championship contender. Perhaps Garuba will get a shot at some point next season as a result of injuries or other unforeseen occurrences that create openings for two-way players.
The former number one pick is starting again with the Warriors.
Dwight Howard says he’s waiting for ‘LeGM’ to call him
Dwight Howard, a former center for the Los Angeles Lakers, made his case to Team USA captain LeBron James via social media. A team led by the current Lakers’ leading scorer is apparently looking to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.Howard and filmmaker Chase Walker may or may not have left a voicemail for James, who they refer to as “LeGM” in the description of the Instagram post, advocating for Howard’s participation on the next Olympic squad.
James has apparently been trying to get his other NBA players to join him in his return to the Olympics. Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, and Draymond Green are all rumored to have spoken with him, as are Anthony Davis, Devin Booker, Damian Lillard, De’Aaron Fox, and Kyrie Irving.
After spending the 2021-22 season with the Lakers, Howard did not play in the NBA again. Howard and James were teammates on the 2020 Lakers’ championship squad and the 2008 U.S. team that won the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics.
James competed in his final Olympics in 2012, but the United States has won four straight gold medals since his 2008 victory.
After losing to Germany in the semifinals and Canada in the bronze medal game, the United States squad recently placed fourth at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. The team, which included Lakers standout Austin Reaves, failed to win a medal, prompting speculation about how to better prepare USA Basketball for the next Olympics.
If James’ rumored all-star team materializes, that would be a huge boost. If he were to lead the United States Olympic squad next summer, he would be 39 years old, while Curry would be 36 and Durant would be 35. In 2012, Kobe Bryant, then 33 years old, was the “grumpy old man” on a team that contained a 19-year-old named Anthony Davis.
