Mauricio Pochettino had already defended his decision to play Ben Chilwell on the left flank on the official website before today’s press conference.
After games like Chelsea’s loss to Nottingham Forest, in which they struggled to produce chances, this has been somewhat of a focal point for Pochettino’s detractors. Most supporters believe that the team would be more dangerous if they switched Chilwell back to left back and inserted a genuine left winger into the lineup.
Pochettino dismisses this notion, stating that the aforementioned formation is the result of Christopher Nkunku’s departure during preseason.
Pochettino said, “Of course it affects the team when you lose players to ιnjury, and we all feel disappointed about that, but we need to accept it and adapt.”
We need to identify options where various players take on new roles in an effort to strike a better balance. Ben, the team’s fullback, may also contribute in other ways.
More opportunities have been made for him in four games than for any other player. Ben played a similar position for the national team only last week.
We agree with those who would like to see us utilise Chilwell in a different way, but for the time being, we are content to let Pochettino make that call. It is too soon to lose faith in him, and he is an experienced leader.
Chelsea: £58m star now in ‘very frustrating’ situation at Stamford Bridge
Romeo Lavia’s’very frustrating’ status on the Chelsea bench has been described by journalist Paul Brown, who spoke with GIVEMESPORT about Lavia’s prospects of making an immediate impact after joining the club in the offseason.
The Belgian international is one of the new players signed by Chelsea during the transfer window, when manager Mauricio Pochettino was allowed to spend close to £400 million.
The Evening Standard reports that Romeo Lavia will be sidelined for more than a month with an ankle ιnjury and will have to wait a long time to make his Chelsea debut.
The 19-year-old, who was transferred to west London from Southampton in a £58 million move after the Saints were relegated to the Championship, is reportedly out of contention to play in his new team’s next matches due to an ιnjury he sustained during the international break.
It’s possible that Lavia may miss at least six weeks of action due to ιnjury, meaning he won’t be able to play in games against Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham, and possibly even Arsenal.
Pochettino’s efforts to bolster his squad during the summer transfer window were bolstered by the defensive midfielder’s decision to join the Blues despite interest from Liverpool, who had agreed to pay £60 million to sign him away from Southampton.
In addition to keeping an eye on Lavia’s condition before approving his transfer to Chelsea, Arsenal were also keeping eyes on the situation, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who recently spoke with GIVEMESPORT.To Brown, Lavia’s knee setback couldn’t have come at a worse time because it would delay the moment when he first makes a significant impact for Chelsea.
The respected journalist believes the teenager faces a number of challenges before becoming one of the first names on the team-sheet, what with a host of household names ahead of him in the pecking order. However, due to the west Londoners’ indifferent form, he may be given a chance when he is fully fit.
When asked by GIVEMESPORT, Brown said:
I can only imagine how disheartening it is for Lavia, who clearly wants to make an impact at Chelsea. He understands he has his work cut out for him if he wants to make the team, as the players ahead of him are all internationals that the club paid a lot of money to get. The last thing he needs is to get hurt. I really hope it’s nothing too serious and that he won’t be out for too long. However, Lavia should have opportunities to shine during the season. I have no doubt that he will soon be starting for Chelsea. He should take advantage of every opportunity that comes his way. So far, I’ve seen that Chelsea’s midfield isn’t quite clicking the way it should because of a lack of balance. Pochettino may be tempted to make some changes to the lineup in the coming weeks, but Lavia should work hard to be in shape so he can make a case for a starting spot.
