Alfie Gilchrist signs new Chelsea contract ahead of potential January exit

Alfie Gilchrist, a defender for Chelsea, has signed a contract extension through June 2025.

On Sunday, the 19-year-old sat on the bench as Chelsea and Bournemouth played to a scoreless draw at the Vitality Stadium.His Blues Under-21s captain has already taken Mauricio Pochettino on a preseason tour of the United States, so the Argentine coach is familiar with him.

While Gilchrist is yet to make his senior team debut, he did get action in about 75 minutes of preseason games this summer under his new management.

Despite interest from Sheffield United in a permanent transfer this summer, Chelsea has decided to sign Gilchrist to a new deal.Gilchrist was also contemplating a loan, and he will be able to do so once again once the January transfer window opens.

The central defender is a lifelong Chelsea fan who was signed from Queens Park Rangers when he was 11 years old.

He was named to the first squad bench for the first time under Frank Lampard last year at Old Trafford and was nominated for PL2 Player of the Year.
