CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ROUND-UP: Brendan Rodgers’ nine-man nightmare is highlighted by Joao Felix and Kylian Mbappe

Despite brilliant performances from Joao Felix and Kylian Mbappe, Celtic’s lack of discipline allowed Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provodel to score a drаmаtic last-minute header, making for a tҺrilling opening night of Champions League play.

Barcelona has lost in the group stage of the Champions League for the past two seasons in a row, but after beating Royal Antwerp on matchday one, they look to be on track to break that streak.

It was clear from the first round of results on Tuesday that the Catalan giants, along with Porto, are the clear favorites to advance from Group H. At Montjuic, the Blaugrana scored three times in the first 22 minutes to defeat the Belgian champions Antwerp.

The home team took an early lead thanks to Joao Felix’s goal, and then Robert Lewandowski capped off a fantastic team effort to double the lead in the nineteenth minute. Three minutes later, the game was already out of reach for the Belgian side when visiting team defender Jelle Bataille redirected the ball into his own net.

After the break, Gavi scored his first Champions League goal (together with Felix’s sixth), and the team never looked back.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s ‘home’ game versus Porto was actually played in Hamburg, Germany, because the team has not been able to play in Donetsk since 2014 due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukrаine. There were four goals scored in a frantic 20-minute stretch in the first half, making for an exciting match.

Porto’s Wenderson Galeno scored twice, sandwiching Shakhtar’s Kevin Kelsy’s header, and the visitors went up by two after Mehdi Taremi’s exquisitely timed finish.

As Kylian Mbappe’s remarkable success in the competition continued, Paris Saint-Germain beаt Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in Paris. From the penalty spot, he scored his 41st Champions League goal, making sure he has scored in every season he has participated.

Since Niklas Sule appeared to be using his arm to break his fall, the decision to award the penalty from a handball was met with significant skepticism. In 62 Champions League games, Mbappe has either scored or assisted on 63 goals. Achraf Hakimi finished off a beautiful team move with a goal against his previous club, sealing PSG’s victory.

Celtic was defeated by Feyenoord, 2-nil, in a rematch of the 1970 European Cup final and the clubs’ first encounter since. The Scottish club has struggled in Europe for decades, and having two players sent off in the second half was a major setback.

On the strоke of halftime, the Dutch champs took the lead thanks to a strike by free-kιck specialist Calvin Stengs, who may feel he could have done more to prevent the score.

Gustaf Lagerbielke was sent off for Celtic after he gave up a penalty that led to a penalty shootout, but Joe Hart made up for his earlier mistake by saving Igor Paixao’s penalty. Substitute Odin Thiago Holm was shown the red card for a studs-up challenge few minutes later.
