Chelsea is in talks with young left-back Ian Maatsen about a new deal. Maatsen almost left Chelsea in the summer.
Fabrizio Romano of Caught Offside says that Chelsea is in talks with young left back Ian aMaatsen about a new deal. The 21-year-old star defender almost left the club during the summer transfer window, but he chose to stay and test himself with Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
Ian Maatsen might look like a new, rookie player in this Chelsea team, but he has played for the first team for three full seasons. After one season in League One and two seasons in the Championship, he is a very experienced worker for his age.
Even though it may have been easy for him to make the starting group at Charlton, Barnsley, and Burnley in the last three seasons, it will be harder for him to do the same at Chelsea. Even though Spurs have been struggling since the start of the season, Mauricio Pochettino has a lot of experienced players to choose from before he turns to Maatsen.
It’s also why Chelsea saw a chance in the market and made a deal with Burnley to buy the 21-year-old defender who is a star on defense. Maatsen, on the other hand, turned down the move and stayed at the club so he could try to earn a spot under Pochettino.
The Argentine boss did give him pretty good playing time in four of the five Premier League games so far. The big question is whether or not he can fight his way into becoming a regular. If he can’t, his long-term future at the club is in doubt.
Maatsen’s skills have gotten a lot of attention, and Real Madrid is one of the teams that likes him. Burnley and other mid-table teams will also keep an eye out for a possible transfer in January, but Chelsea has chosen to go in a different direction.
Fabrizio Romano says that Chelsea is talking to Maatsen about giving him a new deal. “There have been more rumors about Ian Maatsen and his future at Chelsea, so I thought I’d clear them up here,” the Italian writer said.
“From what I know, Maatsen talked with Chelsea in July and August, but no new deal was made. So, they were willing to sell him to Burnley, but he turned down the offer.
“Now, contract talks are still going on, so let’s see what happens in the next few weeks and months before the window in January. Nothing is set in stone yet.”
From a money point of view, Chelsea will hope that Maatsen signs a new deal. Some big names, like Manchester City, are also keeping an eye on his situation, but they are almost done getting Boca Juniors player Valentin Barco.
Chelsea, on the other hand, had considered a new contract earlier in the summer. They may have agreed to sell the player because they didn’t agree with him. But the 21-year-old defensive wunderkind is expected to sign new terms soon to end the rumors. If he doesn’t, Chelsea could lose him for free next summer.
