Andre Onana has had a rough start to life at Old Trafford, but Jonny Evans believes that he will be successful at Manchester United.
Onana, 27, joined Manchester United from Ajax in a £47.2 million deal this summer to reunite with his old coach Erik ten Hag. But has struggled to get off to a good start in red, keeping only one clean sheet in six games. Evans, who returned to United this summer on a free transfer, has subsequently predicted that Onana will be successful despite the club’s rough start to the season.
“It’s a big thing for him to do that,” Evans told TNT Sports. He could have avoided that. I think it’s tough for any player to make an immediate impact at a new club, and perhaps he’s being too hard оn himself.
“I’ve seen that quite frequently. And I can sаy it from personal experience. He’s taking over for longtime goalkeeper David de Gea.
“Again, keep in mind that David, when he first arrived at Manchester United, may have had a difficult time settling in, and we saw the kind of career he would go on to have for this club.”
Most recently, Onana played for United in their Champions League match at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich. The Cameroonian international gave up four goals in the match, one of which came on a shot from Leroy Sane that most would have expected him to stop. A night he’ll want to put behind him as he continues to develop at the club.
This Saturday, United will travel 35 miles to take on Burnley, giving the goalkeeper another opportunity to show his worth as United’s starting goalkeeper.
