After five years with the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson is in the final year of his deal. Thompson’s play has leveled off in recent years, but he and the Warriors still appear committed to working together well beyond the 2023–24 season.
What kind of figures Thompson may bring to the negotiation table next summer was just clarified by NBA insider Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.
To put it another way, “Thompson, in the final year of a five-year, $190 million deal, probably lands somewhere in the middle,” as penned by Mannix. According to the NBA execs I’ve spoken with, a four-year deal paying between $30 and $35 million per season is fair. Thompson and the Warriors appear to have resolved their differences amicably. Put your money on the two parties coming to an agreement.
If Thompson were to sign a four-year contract starting in 2024, he would be able to play through his 38th year. Yet, unlike a player who could rely more on his or her explosiveness or athleticism, Thompson’s otherworldly shooting talent is possibly the easiest skill to retain even as a player ages.
During the 2022-23 regular season, Thompson led the NBA in three-pointers, but he struggled mightily in the playoffs, especially in the Warriors’ second-round loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Nonetheless, it is easy to see why the Warriors would want to retain the multi-time All-Star around for the long haul, what with Stephen Curry still playing at an elite level and Thompson still more than capable of lighting fire.
