3 Atlanta Braves players have secured nominations

As anticipated, Michael Harris II has been a shining star throughout the year, consistently delivering a defensive masterclass. He wrapped up the season with an impressive 7.7 defensive fWAR, ranking in the 92nd percentile for fielding run value and boasting 7 outs above average (OAA). His nomination was widely expected and unquestionably well-deserved.

However, the competition in his category promises to be fierce. Alek Thomas and Brenton Doyle of the Colorado Rockies stand as the other formidable finalists. Doyle, in particular, appears to be a strong contender for the platinum glove, with statistics placing him in the 100th percentile for fielding run value and the 99th percentile for range (OAA), arm value, and arm strength. His impressive 21.6 defensive fWAR marked one of the best performances in baseball.

Yet, it’s worth noting that Doyle doesn’t have the distinction of being the sole outfielder to execute a game-ending double play in postseason history.

One of the most surprising turnarounds in the list is Austin Riley. Few could have foreseen Riley becoming a gold glove finalist, given his track record as one of the league’s least proficient defenders. However, this season witnessed a remarkable shift in his defensive prowess, a testament to his dedication and hard work.

Back in August, our esteemed writer, Mitchell, detailed Riley’s exceptional defensive transformation. By the end of the season, Riley had finally managed to shed his negative grade in OAA.

Adding to the surprise element is the inclusion of Eddie Rosario as a finalist. Despite the astonishment, Rosario secured a nomination, even though his defensive performance throughout the season was far from stellar, concluding with a -2.3 defensive fWAR. This placed him 45th among left fielders who had played a minimum of 60 innings, with Kevin Pillar boasting a higher grade.

While the inclusion of Rosario may seem unconventional, considering the competition, he may still emerge as a potential recipient of the award.
