On Monday, Giannis Antetokounmpo, the two-time NBA MVP and the 2021 NBA champion with the Milwaukee Bucks, signed a US$186 million (S$254.2 million) max extension with the Bucks.
“MILWAUKEEEEEEEEE!! Come on, guys!!! “#BucksInSix #Extended,” Antetokounmpo wrote on X (previously Twitter) on Monday night.
According to ESPN and The Athletic on Monday, the new contract is for three years and includes a player option for the 2027-28 season.
According to Antetokounmpo, signing an extension this offseason is not in his best financial interest. He is instead planning to do it in the summer of 2024. The new NBA season begins on Tuesday, therefore Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee had until 11:59 p.m. Monday to reach an agreement.
In 63 games last season, Antetokounmpo scored 31.1 points per game on average and added 11.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists. When the Bucks defeated the Phoenix Suns in the 2021 NBA Finals, he was named the series’ most valuable player.
After losing in the first round of the playoffs as the Eastern Conference’s top seed last year, the Bucks showed Antetokounmpo they were serious about contending for future championships by acquiring Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard in a trade this offseason.
Antetokounmpo is entering his 11th season in the NBA and has played 719 games (654 starts) with the Bucks, averaging 22.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.3 blocks. REUTERS
