There have been rumors circulating that Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors had discussed extending his deal. However, NBA expert Shams Charania via ClutchPoints claims that their conversational distance remаins very great.
Charania said, “Klay Thompson and the Warriors have been talking about an extension,” on FanDuel’s Run It Back program. However, from what I’ve been told, there’s a significant age and income gap. The negotiations are reportedly at a deadlock right now. In terms of years and pay, Thompson is requesting far more than the Warriors are prepared to offer him in total. It appears that Klay Thompson will become a free agent come summertime.
Klay Thompson and the Warriors marking the end of an era?
Warriors think highly of Thompson. They understand how important he was to their successes over the last ten years. Golden State is having financial issues considering the sums of money they are paying other players. In addition, Thompson, who is 33 years old, has recently suffered multiple severe injuries.
It should be noted that rumors suggest Golden State desires to reimburse Thompson. Simply put, Klay and the Warriors are not in agreement right now. Still, the Warriors and Draymond Green faced a similar situation the previous season, and Golden State signed Green once more this past offseason.
Maybe Thompson and the Warriors can work something out in the offseason next year.
In an ideal world, according to Charania, “the Warriors want to pay him and take care of him.” “However, they also want to watch how the season plays out, and I believe Klay Thompson will have a chip on his shoulder.”
The 2023–24 campaign will be critical for Thompson. The Warriors’ excellent shooting guard has to stay healthy and keep up his current level of play. If Thompson struggles or is forced to miss a lot of games because of ιnjury, teams won’t want to give him a hefty, multi-year contract. He’s in his mid-thirties.
However, Thompson has already proven that he can play on the court and still produce at a high level during the 2022–2023 campaign. After three ιnjury-plagued seasons, Thompson participated in 69 games in 2022–2023. He averaged 21.9 points per game while shooting 41.2 percent from three-point range and 43.6 percent from field goals.
Klay Thompson is still a very good player, thus he deserves to be paid. Nonetheless, it’s clear that the Warriors are proceeding with caution.
