Braves’ options for upcoming players

Charlie Morton Option: $20 million, no buyout

The fate of this decision might not entirely rest with the Braves. At 39 years old, Charlie Morton might be pondering retirement on a beach somewhere. However, for argument’s sake, let’s assume he chooses to play for another year. If that’s the case, the Braves are likely to pick up his option. Finding better value in free agency is a challenge, and Morton’s presence in the clubhouse, especially for younger pitchers, is invaluable. With numerous question marks surrounding their rotation, the Braves won’t let Morton test free agency if he wishes to continue playing.

Eddie Rosario Option: $9 million, no buyout

The likelihood of Eddie Rosario staying on the Braves roster next season is roughly 50/50. However, the odds are much higher that they will exercise his option. At $9 million, Rosario represents a fair price for a player of his caliber, possibly even a bargain. Even if the Braves aim for more stability in left field, they are likely better off picking up Rosario’s option and potentially trading him to gain valuable assets in return.

Collin McHugh Option: $6 million, buyout: $1 million

The decision regarding Collin McHugh isn’t as straightforward as it may seem. McHugh had a challenging year, leading to his exclusion from the postseason roster. Nevertheless, he has a track record of being one of the league’s elite relievers. His age is a concern, turning 37 next season. However, if the Braves believe he can bounce back in 2024, re-signing him for $6 million remains a possibility. That said, it’s predicted that the Braves will allow McHugh to become a free agent this offseason.

Kirby Yates Option: $5.75 million, buyout: $1.25 million

Yates’ high walk rate in 2023, walking 5.5 batters per nine innings, raised concerns. While this isn’t a recipe for long-term success, he managed to achieve a 7-2 record with a 3.28 ERA in 61 appearances, thanks to an impressive 11.9 K/9. Keep in mind that this was Yates’ first full season post-Tommy John surgery. There is an expectation that he can improve his control next year. The Braves are likely to retain him for the 2024 season.

Brad Hand Option: $7 million, buyout: $500,000

The simplest decision among these options. Brad Hand was once an elite reliever, but those days are behind him. At this stage, he’s most effective as a lefty specialist, a role not worth $7 million. Consequently, he will become a free agent this offseason.
