The Los Angeles Lakers’ newfound strength is already being tested just one week into the season.
Before Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers, Darvin Ham gave reports on Rui Hachimura and Gabe Vincent, two players who are in the rotation.
During Sunday’s loss to the Sacramento Kings, Hachimura got a cut on his left eye. He couldn’t play against the Orlando Magic on Monday because he had a headache. Since then, Hachimura has seen a specialist and started the concussion procedure. He is being looked at “one day at a time.”
Ham said, “We’ll see what tomorrow looks like.”
Before the season, Hachimura got a $51 million deal. In three games off the bench, he has averaged 8 points and 3 rebounds in 14.7 minutes.
Because of heel bursitis, Jarred Vanderbilt, another important forward for the Lakers, is out for a while. Vando has started to do more, but he hasn’t moved on from stationary exercise yet.
The Lakers’ backcourt talent will be tested without Vincent. Ham said that after the Magic win, Vincent’s knee ‘began to swell up on him’. The Lakers are still figuring out how bad the problem is.
Vincent has played 28.2 minutes per game for Ham, even though he has trouble with his jump shot. He has also burned a lot of extra time during crucial moments thanks to his on-ball defence and general scrappiness. Ham says that Max Christie will “absolutely” look for work instead of him.
Surprisingly, Ham gave Cam Reddish his first chance to play as a backup shooting guard, but he hasn’t done well so far. On a Wednesday, Ham said again that he only wants to see what Reddish has to offer.
He said, “Max will be here for a long time.” “One of our young stars on the team is Max.”
Christie hasn’t played a second this season.
