Milwaukee didn’t publicly declare itself still a serious N.B.A. title contender until May, when the Bucks started the month with a pair of wins against the Nets. After Jrue Holiday scored 14 points in the first quarter of the second win, one of the league’s best defensive players relaxed in the comfortable surroundings of the home locker room.
After the game, he checked his phone as usual and saw a message from his wife, Lauren. A phrase that is guaranteed to get any partner’s attention was included: “We need to talk.”
“You could have done more,” Lauren Holiday wrote.

“I don’t think he did a bad job,” Lauren Holiday emphasized. I needed to know what he was thinking; please explain. I initially disagreed with him when he said, “I took what the defense dictated.” Because I am also a competitor, he has to have such kinds of talks with me.
Since their days as student-athletes at U.C.L.A., the Holidays have been a unit, and their bond has only strengthened since June 2016, when doctors discovered she had a brain tumor, six months into her pregnancy with their daughter, Jrue Tyler. They’re parents to two young kids at this point and still share a genuine passion for each other’s athletic pursuits. They realized last year that they might be doing more as a pair, and so they now manage a seven-figure social fund that gives money to organizations led by Black people and businesses owned by Black people.
In November, the family uprooted and moved to Milwaukee from New Orleans. For Jrue Holiday, the Milwaukee Bucks gave up veteran guards George Hill and Eric Bledsoe, three first-round draft picks in the future, and the right to swap two more first-round picks in a four-team trade in the hopes of convincing Giannis Antetokounmpo to sign a long-term contract with the small-market franchise.
Holiday quickly learned that business concerns were only a small part of the weight as Antetokounmpo signed a five-year, $228 million contract extension, the so-called supermax, 21 days after the trade, relieving the nerves of Bucks fans.
The last time the Bucks won a title was in 1970–1971. After earning consecutive Most Valuable Player awards and last year’s Defensive Player of the Year award, Antetokounmpo has more pressure on his shoulders than anybody else in town, but Holiday is right on his heels. Despite only one All-Star appearance and 31 playoff games on his 11-year résumé entering this season, he was touted as the Bucks’ missing piece who would take them to the next level. Months of negotiation preceded his April 2018 signing of a four-year, $134 million contract deal.

Lauren Holiday was in accord. In her eight years as a member of the national team, she competed in four major tournaments, three of which the United States won with her assistance. Despite losing the 2011 World Cup final on penalty kicks against Japan, she insisted that the perfect score was four goals.

Since Lauren Holiday has experience dealing with pressure, she can be a good sounding board for her husband as he prepares to lead the Bucks into the playoffs, where they will face some demons in the form of a first-round game against the Miami Heat. After having the best regular season record in the NBA for the second year in a row, Milwaukee was eliminated in the second round by Miami in five games last summer at Walt Disney World.

Funding initially went to places like New Orleans, Indianapolis (her hometown), and Los Angeles (his hometown) because they were close to the Holidays. On Monday, they added another million dollars to the fund, kickstarting a second round of scholarships and including Milwaukee in the spotlight.
“I’m nоt gоing tо lie: I didn’t reаlly wаnt tо gо tо the bubble,” Jrue Hоlidаy аdmitted. It just didn’t feel like bаsketbаll time. The pregnаncy оf my wife. It was tо be expected that the new seasоn in a new city wоuld prоvide new оbstacles. The Hоlidays’ sоn Hendrix was just five weeks оld when their family mоved tо Milwaukee. Accоrding tо Lauren Hоliday, they decided оn a hоme after lооking at “pictures оn Zillоw.” When Jrue had Cоvid-19 in February and missed 10 games, having a basement in his new hоme came in very handy.
He spent nearly two weeks in “isolation in my house,” he added, hiding out in the basement. FaceTime conversations and drawings from 4-year-old J.T., as her parents call her, left for her father at the top of the basement stairs were the high points of his contact with the kids.
At the very least, “I got to hear my kids,” Jrue Holiday said.
He added he had “all the symptoms — chills, fever, headache, body aches, and I lost my taste and smell.” But Jrue, who turns 31 next month, has bounced back to have a career-best season. Prior to Sunday’s season finale against Chicago, he had a career-high 50.3% field goal percentage and 39.2% three-point percentage while further solidifying his status as one of the game’s premier two-way players. Veteran players like the Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard and the Heat’s Andre Iguodala have publicly proclaimed him to be the finest individual defender in the NBA. He’s only 6-foot-3, but with to his strength, anticipation, and tenacity, he can cover a lot of ground as a defender.

Kevin Durant of the Nets remarked, “He’s special on that side of the ball.”
“He’s plаying with such freedоm,” Lаuren Hоlidаy remаrked. аnd I think thаt’s exаctly whаt he required. I believe in the vаlue оf chаnge, аnd I must sаy thаt this оne hаs been fаntаstic fоr him.
The extent to which Holiday contributes to the Bucks’ postseason success is a major factor in how he is viewed by the outside world. Coach Mike Budenholzer of the Bucks listened to calls to experiment on offense (more screening) and defense (more switching) after his team’s humbling playoff elimination at the hands of Toronto in 2019 and Miami in 2018. After years of depending on depth surrounding Antetokounmpo, the team decided to try a more top-heavy roster with the goal of increasing versatility, but this experimentation came at a cost.
After falling to the third seed in the East, the Bucks may have to defeat the Miami Heat, the Brooklyn Nets, and the Philadelphia 76ers in order to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974. Holiday’s presence should relieve some of the burden on Giannis Antetokounmpo and sharpshooter Khris Middleton, but the assets he commanded in the trade and the contract he signed require him to produce All-Star levels of success, regardless of whether he ever regains the All-Star status he attained in 2012–13 with the 76ers.
Holiday, unfazed, asserted that he was “ready to go,” adding that he wished the playoffs “were here already.” Welcoming more tough postgame critiques from Lauren, he continued, is wrapped up in that readiness.
“She’s literally the athlete and the winner in our family,” Jrue Holiday remarked. It meant a lot to me that she said that. True, and she has evidence to support it.”
